From Beyond the Grave

Well, Katie and I aren't dead so, really it's from beyond the silence of our blog. :)
Are you guys missing us? I am missing CBRS, let me tell ya! Aside from slowly going crazy in the depths of grad school, I do work with one ASD kiddo a few hours a week.

Recently I flipped the script on him and made him in charge of the session. I provided him with the topic (anxiety) a time frame (15-20 mins) and my bag of rando supplies:

Beautiful

Let me tell you--that kiddo straight up nailed it! After he talked to me about what anxiety is and why too much of it isn't good thing, he had me take some crepe paper...

Looks about right

....and he had me write my anxieties down on strips he had cut out. After we taped them to the kite, we let my anxieties 'float away' while we talked about coping skills.

Brillant!

One great way to take information and turn it into knowledge is to teach what you have learned to someone else. This was such a fun way to allow him to have control over the session as well as use skills he might not have realized he possessed :)

Hope all you party people are having a great summer!

  1. Hi,
I just want to say thank you sooo much for all the amazing interventions here! I am an elementary school social work intern and I have been looking for something like this for a while. There are a lot of very simple ideas that don't require me spending a ton of money that I am SURE will e a big help to my kids. THANK YOU!!!
