Mountains out of molehills
This saying and visual was used to help describe that the behavior corrected to begin with was no biggie, but the choices and reactions that followed turned the situation into a big one.
We started with the molehill problem, then while discussing the decisions made to make the problem bigger, added the layers to create the mountain.
Sort of along the same lines is something I use ALL THE TIME when it comes to measuring how I should react to something that is stressing me out. My client and I created a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being something that is a minor inconvenience, and 10 is a crisis, like your house is burning down. We then wrote out examples of how to react to these appropriately.
The concept is that your client (or in my case, I) use the scale to stop and think about whether a situation should stress me out and take more of my energy and attention than necessary.
