High Five For Friendship!

When friends argue, what do you do?

Begin with  helping your client understand that even very good friends get into arguments, and this is ok, as long as they are able to work through it without hurting each other. Write this "high five" out as a way to remember in a journal or as a poster. Then practice, practice, practice!

1. Stop: Just like STAR, you stop your body, what you are saying and doing, in order to think.
2. Explain: In a calm voice, explain your side.
3. Listen: Now it is the other person's turn to explain. Very important, and very difficult when you are upset!
4. Think: What are your choices? Is there a coping skill you can use here?
5. Choose: Choose the best option, and follow through.
